Snowflake Challenge: Day 5

Yes, I'm skipping Day 4. I don't really know who to approach, to be honest.

Day 5

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

If we’re going to get technical, my first fandom was Pern. This was long before I discovered that there was such a thing as fandom. I used to spin out stories for my brother at bed time when we were at my dad’s for a weekend, and invariably they were Pern stories. I grew up in Pern; part of my soul will always live there.

My introduction to HP fandom was random – I believe it was through Mugglenet? I was checking for updates on the next book (book… 4? Maybe?). I stumbled on an article about fanfiction and clicked on it. In it was a link to one of the first SS/HG stories, though I can’t remember the name of it. And it mentioned the Yahoo group WIKTT. And that was the beginning of the end. I started reading, and eventually I started writing, though I’ll never be known for my SS/HG stories.

Of course, all the cool kids had an LJ at that point, and I got one. Initially it was mainly filled with memes and such, and some RL stuff from college. I chose my username, gelsey, which I still use. It has ties back to my real first name, which is how I chose it. On WIKTT, I was known by my Yahoo email, arumorofangels.

Since then, of course, I’ve branched out in writing – I tend toward rarepairs and stuff no one really reads.

I’ve also played with other fandoms. Back when the Star Trek reboot came out, my friend triskellion linked me to the kink memes it spawned, and that was how I wrote my last bit of real fanfiction for several years.

I’ve dabbled in a couple other fandoms, more reading than writing, though. Ree introduced me to several fandoms I’ve enjoyed over the years, though I rarely write in them. But I’ve never left HP fandom, even if I’ve gotten quiet. I’ve been trying to be more active lately, though, and I don’t think I’ll ever leave HP fandom. It’s my favorite spot. I’ve RPed in it, I’ve written in it, I’ve read in it. I love it, and it is home for me.

I’m also a part of the Honor Harrington fandom. Not in writing anything, but in a fangroup I’m second-in-command in. It’s a lot of fun, and I’ve made a lot of friends there, as well.
