So, we all love fandom, right?

I know that especially in the last year or so, a lot of us have stuck our toes into other fandoms. I've been doing this for years, if not writing things, reading them (mostly because triskellion finds the most interesting things). Other fandoms can be great and interesting: Star Trek Reboot, Sherlock, and now Game of Thrones seems to be gaining speed (I'm rereading the first book so I can read the second).

But have you all ever come across a fandom that made your jaw drop? That makes you go really?! Are you serious?!!!

I used to think that I would respect almost any fandom. And then I met this girl awhile back in my writer's group, and now I find myself a bit gobsmacked. The fandom she writes, you ask?

Kung Fu Panda fanfiction.

Is it so wrong to facepalm and groan at this? It's just... wow. I'm sorry. I have trouble respecting the fandom. I mean, Pokemon is one thing--the age group that writes that is age appropriate, so far as I can tell. But a early twenty-something girl. I just. Comprehension eludes me. The thing is, she is a good writer, as far as I can tell--still needs a bit of work, but good--and from that it's less than half a step away into original fiction, especially incorporating mythology as she does.

So Kung Fu Panda. Really. I just have no idea how to deal with this...

Have you ever had a similar instance?

There are some things you just shouldn't ask.

Just don't.

And just be glad that my son's My Little Pony crossed with Castle fanfic isn't quite finished.

I... yeah, never read Ponglight fic, even out of morbid curiousity.

I actually understand My Little Pony fic better than Kung Fu Panda... but that's just me.

At least your boy's being creative!(?)

Ooh, butting in with a question. I keep seeing My Little Pony stuff around everywhere. Is there something new I don't know about that has rebooted this?
babsbybend: sunshinebabsbybend on July 4th, 2011 03:58 pm (UTC)
My Little Pony cross-overs are Rule 34 P.

pern_dragonpern_dragon on July 4th, 2011 06:40 pm (UTC)
Butting in with an answer. ;P
Why, yes, something HAS happened to reboot this. Apparently it's quite popular, and I see several of the Wrock-Youtubers backing it as a thing to enjoy. I've seen a couple of "music videos" using it for Weird Al songs, and they were AMAZINGLY done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e10_gyvtp80 and http://www.youtube.com/user/FluttershyElsa#p/u/19/WhOlAU4t9Hs
Even if I'm not necessarily on board with the MLP:FIM thing, I can totally appreciate the skillz needed to make those vids. :D
Gelseygelsey on July 4th, 2011 08:56 pm (UTC)
You do? I haven't seen it myself, but I do think there was a new Little Pony movie awhile back?

I know I totally would have written that if it had occurred to me as a kid... alas, but I was obsessed with Pern. LOL.

Yeah, I just had it reading this ...

I don't understand any of the anime fandoms (not that I begrudge them thier fandom-- I mean I'm I'll for squeeing over pretty much anything) but I don't understand a lot the videogame or anime fandoms. And yeah, Kung Fu Panda o.0

However, I think we should all now go write a Smurfs Gangbang.

I plan to jump headfirst into A Game of Thrones fandom as soon as I finish up my obligations here in Potterdom. *Read faster self*

Also, it's wonderful to see you posting again. I have missed seeing your name.
babsbybend: sunshinebabsbybend on July 4th, 2011 03:32 pm (UTC)
I still have a published copy of "Elfquest" cross-over with "Smurfs," but I gave away my copy of "Star Trek:OS" cross-over with the "Here Comes the Brides" television show. The book was called "Ishmael."

Gelseygelsey on July 4th, 2011 08:51 pm (UTC)
I knew someone once who was really into anime; I can't say I understand most of them either, but they're infinitely more understandable than Kung Fu Panda.

*snorfles* Smurfs Gangbang. I was just thinking something like that the other day when the commercial came on.

I hope you peek your head in Potterdom some! I might tag along with you into Game of Thrones--it was your posts that reminded me how much I enjoyed the first book, and so I dug it up to reread and continue the series. I have not gotten to see the show, sadly--I didn't start getting HBO until it was well into the show, and it's going to go away here soon too *sighs* So I guess I'll be a bit lost with the TV stuff.

Aww thanks. I just haven't had much positive to say lately. Even though I haven't been commenting, I've been reading most all of your posts lately :)

The entire season is on Demand right now, and I love it. I'm going to be so sad when they remove it from on demand.

Oh yes. Sometimes you just can't help yourself.

*shudders* Pokemon smut.

One of my reviewiers on FFN is into Power Rangers fanfic. I shuddered. I have been doing Star Trek (OS) for better than 35 years, but Power Rangers>?????
Gelseygelsey on July 5th, 2011 04:59 am (UTC)
I can sort of grasp Power Rangers fic. There was a lot of character dynamics in the first one, from what I remember.

Of course, I caught the beginning of PR because of my brother, and I was old enough to crush on the Green/White Ranger, so that might be why...

"Winnie the Pooh" porn.

Shown to me because the person knew how much I enjoyed the books as a child, and wanted to show me I could 'grow into the fandom as an adult,' or some such nonsense.

<hands you the mental floss> PLEEEEEEEASE, Elliot, work on brain-bleach FAAAAAAASTER!
Gelseygelsey on July 5th, 2011 05:03 am (UTC)
... I think you just killed a portion of my brain.

That is... is...

I have no words *hands*

Yes, we need that brain bleach...

Unneeded information is unneeded
I read that crack/pr0n way back when over at Yuletide and I actually liked it.

Also, I ttly read Finding Nemo mpreg clownfish slash and actually enjoyed it (>_>)

I used to be all "OHNOEZ Narnia is sa~cred~" but nowadays I just compartmentalize the books and the movies in different parts of my brain, and enjoy the prettiness of Skandar Keynes Edmund and Ben Barnes Caspian in fanfic.

tl;dr: Kungfu Panda isn't all that far-fetched to me. I'd just be concerned that most/all the fanfic is furry. Animal ears/tails/eyes/claws/feet = sure, humanoid animals =/= my cup of tea

I have fetched up against strange ones in the past. I can't recall since I blocked the experience to protect my sanity.
Gelseygelsey on July 5th, 2011 08:21 pm (UTC)
Hehe. Hard to block this one, as the girl comes to our writers' group.
patricia_writes: Cosmopolitanpatricia_writes on July 5th, 2011 05:15 pm (UTC)
That is truly odd. I think the thing about it is that fandom based on written books is one thing, I mean, it's all writing...but I don't get them based on cartoons. Huh?

Very odd.
Gelseygelsey on July 5th, 2011 08:24 pm (UTC)
Some TV shows spawn good fandoms--House, NCIS, etc. But this one just boggles my mind.
