Trying to remember a book

Okay, so I've been thinking about this book I read ages ago recently, and then booknerdguru was talking about stuff that reminded me even more of this book, so obviously this all means that I need to reread it, yes?

I remember having the book, owning it, reading it. I vaguely remember the cover (enough so that I would likely recognize it if I saw it again). But I can't find the book anywhere--not downstairs in the bookcases, not in my bookcase, not anywhere. And I can't remember the title or the author.

So I'm coming to you for help. Just in case one of you have read it and remember it.

Book contains a female protagonist/narrator. I believe she was raped early in the plot and she never married or had children. There was a war in her land and she ended up involved somehow (general later on, maybe, I can't remember).

The book contained a lot of interesting information of troop movement and care, the amount of horses and people needed at any given time notated many times through out the book, as well as real war tactics.

I think in the end (if I'm not mixing up novel plots) that the main character is old and wishes to be sent on to the next life in the manner of the religion she grew up in, though there is a new, Christian-like religion now and they disapprove very much.

Can anyone tell me what the title and author of this book are? (or am I completely mixing up different novels?)

Either way, I'm definitely looking for the one with the war tactics interspersed within it.
