Snowflake Challenge: Day 9

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 9
In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Talk about a talent you discovered you have. Finding folks who are geekier than you, or on the flip side, finding out that there is no one geekier than you. A person who changed your life. The possibilities are endless. Big or small, what unexpected surprises have you found?

Oh gosh. I’m surprised at how much fandom has meant to me – how much it’s led to. My best friends all came out of fandom in some way, shape or form. triskellion, Leah, somigliana, even my darling angel_vixen came tangentially from fandom (Through a fandom friend). I love you guys so much. I don’t know what I’d have done without all of you throughout the years. You all have changed my life. *hugs everyone close* If I’ve forgotten anyone here, please don’t be mad! I’m so tired!

Some of my best times have come from it. My ability to at least seem extroverted at times in public can be traced to conventions, which came from fandom. This has been an invaluable skill, at work and in general.

There are a few surprises I could have done without – some friends I made then lost; a few fics I wish I had never had scar my brain. (There’s a reason I still add house elf sex to my list of squicks, folks.)

I never would have expected to love SS/HG, which is my first pairing and the one where almost all my friends live. Or be fascinated with Arthur/Bellatrix. Or write like I have in the past. Writing – ah, I think I might have a small talent for it! I will never be a JKR, but I adore it and I think there is something there I’d love to do something with someday.

Or to have developed more mad editing skills through fandom. Or some minor coding skills. Things I can build on later in life, I hope.

Oh gosh, fandom has brought me so many things and people and all the things that I value so much.

What a lovely fandom-fan post. :)

SS/HG was one of my first HP ships too, and it's still one I'm more than happy to read. It's sure produced some great fics over the years.

But I'd also read Snape/Hermione/Dobby, if it exists. The fandom really does have a surprising amount of house-elf smut.

Thanks!

It has produced some fabulous pieces over the years, for sure! Still does!

*shudders* It's actually through a challenge I think you ran lo many years ago, I stumbled on this ficlet labeled crack that wasn't crack, that was Dobby/Narcissa, and I'm still scarred. I just can't read those things usually. I have very very few lines, generally, but I have trouble getting past that one.

There are so many wonderful things about fandoms and the people in them :)

There is. It's the people that mean the very most to me, though, I think.
