etiquette question

would it be rude to email my dad and ask him if he's still using the nice old camera he had while I was growing up, and if not, can I have it?

because yes, I would like it... and I know he uses a digital one now. I'm feeling creative enough to try good ol' film....

I know for a fact he uses digital cameras now, and this is a nice camera worth a nice sum. Should I offer money off the bat, or see what he says first? If I should even approach him about it...

Not at all, go ahead and ask. If he isn't using it, I can't see why he shouldn't let you borrow it.

I don't think it is rude at all... just don't be all righteous about it

No, he might even get a kick out of you remebering it and wanting to have it. Like passing on the memeories.

Hmm. He might. I didn't even think of that!

No, not at all, why would that be rude? Family members pass things around all the time! If you don't want to ask to have it, maybe phrase it as an indefinite loan? "Hey, remember that old camera you had? If you're not using it, would you mind terribly if I tried my hand at some film photography? I think I might like it, but I don't want to buy a camera just yet until I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it" type of thing.

I mostly wonder because he and I don't have the closest or best of relationships. Heh. Good suggestion on the borrowing though. I should do that...

Very true, I admit. It's just me and him don't have the strongest of relationships. I've talked to him more in the last two months (mostly over family events/news) than I have in the last year or more.

I agree with all of the above! Definitely not rude.

I agree that it wouldn't be rude!
