Question
So, when Severus first joined the DEs when he was young... do you think Voldie was all snake-like yet, or that happened between when Severus joined and when the Potters were attacked?

Voldie didn't become snake-like until after he "died" trying to kill Harry. Until then, he was still (mostly) human and rather charismatic.

Mmm. Good to know. Thanks!

Dumbledore said that each time Tom killed someone, he looked less human. Harry saw that for himself in the memories.

One can only wonder what he would have looked like if he'd gone for an eight part (he would have thought it the seventh) when he killed Susan Bone's grandmother. Apparently, he personally didn't or there would have been an eighth.

Hmmm. Ponders. Yes, that makes sense.

He would have been horrid to behold if he'd done that! Ick.

I'm with sabrebabe. The real snakeyness, I think, is when he had to make a new body. He did already have the red glowing eyes, especially when he was emotional (like when he heard about Slytherin's locket).

From HBP, re interview with Dumbledore for the DADA post:

His features were
not those Harry had seen emerge from the great stone cauldron almost two years ago:
They were not as snake-like, the eyes were not yet scarlet, the face not yet masklike, and
yet he was no longer handsome Tom Riddle. It was as though his features had been
burned and blurred; they were waxy and oddly distorted, and the whites of the eyes now
had a permanently bloody look, though the pupils were not yet the slits that Harry knew
they would become. He was wearing a long black cloak, and his face was as pale as the
snow glistening on his shoulders.

That always got me about the snow on his shoulders. This scene was, as I recall, when he was in Dumbledore's office. How/when did he get the tiara into the Room of Requirement in that short visit, and wouldn't the heat of the fire i n Dumbledore's office melt the snow? (I know that the castle itself can be freezing cold, and that the students were usually bundled up between classes.)

I guess it depends how much snow was on his shoulders when he entered the castle. I know, though, that even in a 1920's house, several degrees of latitude further south, it can be pretty damn cold until the central heating kicks in.

The other thing is that since no one appears to have brought Voldemort to Dumbledore's office or to be waiting to escort him off the grounds, who can say how long this 'short' visit really was.

Like I told Barb, maybe the castle just really didn't like him so it didn't warm him up...

Perhaps the castle really didn't like him, so it didn't warm him up enough for the snow to melt.

If he was not-yet snakelike (but growing moreso), could he have been getting coldblooded (and, therefore, his heat wouldn't pass through the cloak to melt the snow)?

Quite possibly. I just thought that the air would have been warm enough, chilly though Dumbledore's reception was.

That's how I took it. He was so cold-blooded--and cold-hearted--that the snow remained unmelted. Perhaps there even was a physical chill around him.

Thanks for the text. I'd totally forgotten! Yet another reason I need to do a complete reread of the series O.o

Thanks so much!
